P. 7
PREFACE
The second section highlights the main findings of the census and delineates the
major changes taken place in agriculture sector of the country during the inter-censual period.
The third section contains to 85 statistical tables based on the census data. The census
tabulations are at the country and provincial levels in All Pakistan Report (Vol.1 ), while at the
province and district levels in Province Reports (Vol.2), i.e. Part-1 for NWFP, Part-2 for Punjab,
Part-3 for Sindh and Part-4 for Balochistan. These tables are by and large in line with the
1972, 1980 and 1990 censuses of agriculture to facilitate comparabili-ty.
Like every census, this exercise was gigantic and of immense national
importance. Thus, an utmost care and caution was employed.at every stage. The entire staff of
Agricultural Census Organization (ACO) remained over busy through out the period in their
respective capacities and thus deserves profound appreciation for their keen interest, hard
work and dedication.
Census· taking is rather impossible without involving a large field force for
carrying out census field operations which in this case was, as usual, drawn from Provincial
Revenue Departments and Federal Bureau of Statistics (FBS) . The services rendered by them
are duly commended and acknowledged. It would not be justified to release this report without
acknowledging the cooperation, computing skills and labour put in by the officers and staff of
Data Processing Centre of FBS located at Lahore alongside Agricultural Census Organization
under the able guidance of its Director, Mr.Arif Ali Haleem.
Last but not the least, thanks are due to all the households scattered in every
nook and corner of the country which were interrogated during the census field operations for
the patience kept up while responding to the queries made and providing accurate and useful
information to the census field staff without fear and reservations.
Under the circumstances it was the best effort but, nevertheless, the chances of
short comings and lapses · may not be ruled out and are regretted. The comments /
suggestions, if any, from the users for future improvements would be appreciated.
